Persuasion Guide

The information for this chart comes from the Official Japanese Strategy Guide. Since only parts of it could be found on the internet I had to fill in some gaps myself. The base is the starting persuasion % that is reduced according to how weakened/not weakened the target is.  The less HP remaining the closer the actual % is to the base. The Arbitration emblem adds 30 to the base but the base cannot exceed 100. The base for any combination not shown below is 5.

Hiring Guide

Each city has different classes that can be recruited. Every city has soldiers but they also have one or two other classes. Of these, only one is displayed in the shop for you to recruit. To get the other one to appear you can move off of the city and come back or just reload your game. There is a 50% chance of either one appearing so it may take more than one try. Once you find a class that you want, you get to name it and choose its starting element and level. The total price is base price + price per level * level -1. So a level 5 soldier would cost 1000 + 200 * 4 or 1800 goth.

Class Guide

The stat growth stated is what the game uses so now everything is right. There will still be some variance to what is actually gained but the figures vary off of the stated values. Thank you Olan for taking the time to find the correct values for all the classes.

UNISEX

Soldier

The basic class unit. The soldier has no requirements and has no best weapon. There are no special abilities for the soldier either. Since it is the basic unit I give the soldier 1 star.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 2
STR: 4
INT: 4
AGI: 5

Archer

The archer requires AGI 37. Its best weapon is the bow. There is no special ability for an archer. The archer is the worst class besides the soldier. Their strength is terrible, which makes their bow attacks very weak. Hawkmen make better archers. I give them 1 star.

Stat Growth:
HP: 6
MP: 2
STR: 4
INT: 3
AGI: 6

Wizard

The wizard requires INT 26, MP 16, N or C.  The special ability of a wizard is that it can use 3 attack spells. The wizard is great in the beginning of the game, but sirens and liches are definite upgrades. Try to have only female wizards, except if you want a chaotic male to become a lich. I give them 3 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 5
MP: 6
STR: 3
INT: 6
AGI: 4

Ninja

The ninja requires STR 36, AGI 37, and its best weapon is the katana. The special abilities of a ninja are a shuriken throw and the use of one attack spell. The ninja is a decent class that excels in AGI. A good idea is to change a ninja later on into a swordmaster for optimal performance. This class is great in the beginning of the game, 3 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 5
MP: 3
STR: 4
INT: 4
AGI: 7

 Knight

The knight requires STR 51, AGI 53, N or L, and the Knight's Certificate Emblem. Its best weapon is a sword. The special ability of a knight is an ability to either heal, cleanse, or use lightning bow. The knight is the strongest fighter in the beginning of the game, but swordmasters and dragoons are better later. They are a decent low-level class that I give 3 stars.

Stat Growth
HP: 7
MP: 3
STR: 6
INT: 4
AGI: 5

Cleric

The cleric requires INT 28, MP 18, N or L.  The special ability for a cleric is the use of 3 Virtue spells. You always need a healer at the beginning of the game. This class does their job well. I give them 4 stars. Make them into priests as soon as possible.

Stat Growth:
HP: 5
MP: 5
STR: 3
INT: 7
AGI: 4

Priest

The priest requires MP 76, INT 96, N or L, less than 10 kills, and the Heavenly Spirit Emblem. The special ability of a priest is the use of any 3 Virtue spells other than Ignis Fatuus. Priests are one the best classes to have around throughout the game. Make sure you have one. I give the priest 5 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 5
MP: 6
STR: 4
INT: 6
AGI: 4

MALE

Beast Tamer

The beast tamer requires HP 142, STR 34, and to have slain at most one beast. His best weapon is a whip. His special ability is that your beasts within 3 panels increase in power. Beast tamers are nothing special. They do not excel in any category. Early on, they fight as well as any other classes. However, supporting beasts is not comparable to the special abilities that other melee classes receive. I give them two stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 6
MP: 2
STR: 5
INT: 3
AGI: 5

Warlock

The warlock requires MP 78, STR 90, INT 76, N or L, and The Pen and the Sword Emblem. His best weapon is a sword. His special abilities include the use of 2 support spells. Their special attack does opposite elemental damage at close range.  Their attack has a penalty causing the attack damage to get reduced. Also, they can only use supplemental magic. With special characters and the swordmaster available to use supplemental magic, you may not need a warlock. I give the class 3 stars for their practicality.

Stat Growth:
HP: 6
MP: 5
STR: 5
INT: 5
AGI: 5

Dragoon

The dragoon requires HP 215, STR 109, AGI 94, N or C, and the Dragon's Scale Emblem. His best weapon is a sword or spear. His special abilities are the use of one attack spell and an increase in damage against dragons. The dragoon is a little over-rated. Their attack and defense are strong, but their magic and attack defense are terrible. The class is not as versatile as the swordmaster, but better than the beast tamer. I give them 3 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 7
MP: 2
STR: 6
INT: 3
AGI: 5

Swordmaster

The swordmaster requires STR 95, AGI 111, and the Book of Initiation Emblem. His best weapon is a sword. His special abilities are a stone throw, a stun blast (must have a katana equipped to use), and the use of 1 supplemental spell. This class is awesome. They have a strong attack, decent, and can use a supplemental spell (give them fluid magic for magic users). They are more agile than dragoons and have better magic resistance. I perfer to have between 2 and 3 characters as this class. Alphonse makes a good swordmaster as well. The swordmaster deserves 4 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 6
MP: 3
STR: 5
INT: 3
AGI: 6

Bandit

The bandit is a male class that is only available to the computer. They therefore cannot be recruited. His best weapon is an axe. I cannot give them a rating since they are unrecruitable.

Stat Growth:
HP: 6
MP: 2
STR: 4
INT: 4
AGI: 4

Duke Knight

The duke knight is a strong fighter. They cannot be recruited and can only be used by the computer. I cannot give them a rating since they are unrecruitable.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 4
STR: 6
INT: 5
AGI: 4

FEMALE

Dragon Tamer

The dragon tamer requires HP 140, MP 14, and to have slain at least one dragon. Her best weapon is a thrusting sword. Her special ability  gives all dragons within 3 panels an increase in power. She can use 1 missile attack spell. The dragon tamer is about equal to the beast tamer. I give them 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 6
MP: 3
STR: 4
INT: 4
AGI: 5

Witch

The witch requires MP 38, INT 35, N or C, and the Vixen's Whisper Emblem. Her best weapon is a wand or staff. Her special abilities are fascination, which charms enemies, and the use of two support spells. I believe the witch is best used casting fluid magic on your stronger mages. The only witch you should consider using is Deneb. Still, they are more useful than the archer and have decent stat growth. I give them 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 5
MP: 6
STR: 3
INT: 4
AGI: 6

Siren

The siren requires MP 60, INT 60, and the Philosopher's Stone Emblem.  Her best weapon is a fan. Her special ability is the use of 3 attack and/or summon spells. These girls are very good. Their magic is superb. I recommend having at least one. You may want more if you choose to turn one into a lich. The only problem is that there are so many special magic users available. This class is top notch and deserves 4 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 5
MP: 7
STR: 3
INT: 7
AGI: 3

Valkyrie

The valkyrie requires STR 48, INT 41, L or N, and the Lancer Emblem. Her best weapon is a spear. Her special ability allows her to use 2 attack spells. These girls are the best female attacker and all around female class. Their attack and magic are fairly strong. I recommend having one or two. This class is very versatile and deserves 4 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 6
MP: 2
STR: 5
INT: 5
AGI: 5

DEMI-HUMAN

Giant

The giant is a brute that excels in strength, but lacks intelligence and agility. They are just a basic monster that is not very good. Their special attack is strong, but their lack of AGI makes it hard for them to hit enemies. I give them 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 9
MP: 3
STR: 8
INT: 2
AGI: 4

Mermaid

The mermaid does well in water and has the abilities of using a lullaby and a speed up. Her best weapon is a spear. Recruiting one mermaid is more than enough. Low strength and movement are not good combinations for any attacker class. Valkyries are much better. I give them 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 6
MP: 5
STR: 4
INT: 5
AGI: 5

Fairy

The fairy has the abilities to fly, float, use fairy's kiss that heals status/recovers HP. They also use fairy's embrace, which allows a second turn/recovers HP, and a magic missile ranged attack. Fairies are weak and have low defense, but their abilities are somewhat usable. Their agility is the highest in the game. These creatures are all about support and deserve 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 3
MP: 6
STR: 3
INT: 4
AGI: 8

Hawkman

The hawk man has the abilities to fly and to use a thunder arrow attack.  His special weapon is the hammer. Hawkman are great. These guys are usable in almost any situation. They have good stat growth for a class you can get early in the game. The next best thing to Canopus for all you Ogre Battle fans. You should get one as early as possible. A great addition to the team and well deserving of 5 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 7
MP: 2
STR: 6
INT: 3
AGI: 5

OTHER

Pumpkinhead

Pumpkinheads are mysterious creatures. One sells items to Deneb in a special shop. They cannot be found as enemies or allies in the game.

TRANSMIGRATION

Angel Knight

The angel knight requires HP 215, MP 66, STR 89, INT 81, AGI 88, L, and the Archangel's Feather Emblem. Its best weapon is a thrusting sword. A character must die in battle to become an angel knight when he or she meets the requirements. Even then, transmigration is not guaranteed. It may take a few tries to turn a character into an angel knight. The special abilities of an angel knight are Poignant Melody, which restores HP/MP to the undead, and Banish, which drains the enemy's MP and acts as an exorcism. Angel knights live up their name. Unfortunately, their defense and attack are nothing special. Not the best character, but certainly a good addition to the army. I recommend just getting Lobelia as I do not see a need for more. I give them 4 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 7
MP: 3
STR: 5
INT: 5
AGI: 6

Lich

The lich requires MP 118, INT 134, C, and a  Ring of the Dead. A character must die in battle to become a lich when he or she meets the requirements. Note that the ring must be equipped before a character dies. The special ability of a lich is the use of any 3 non-virtue, non-summon spells. The lich, in my opinion, is the best unit in the game. You should get one at all costs. Make a chaotic wizard or siren one. I give the lich my highest rating of 5 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 5
MP: 7
STR: 2
INT: 7
AGI: 5

Dark Angel

Dark angels are evil angels that have been exiled from heaven. They have black feathers and are corrupted. Dark angels can use any 3 spells.

Stat Growth
HP: 7
MP: 5
STR: 6
INT: 5
AGI: 5

UNDEAD

Ghost

The ghost is an undead character that can float, teleport, and use up to 3 bane spells. Use necromancy when a human character dies to make it a ghost.  It can only be permanently killed by exorcism. They are terrible fighters. I give them one star.

Stat Growth:
HP: 5
MP: 5
STR: 4
INT: 6
AGI: 4

Dragon Zombie

The dragon zombie is an evil undead dragon with the ability to regenerate. Have a dragon die and then use necromancy on it to make it a zombie dragon. Even thought it regenerates, why would you let a unit die on purpose? It is about as strong as the lower level dragons so I give it 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 4
STR: 7
INT: 4
AGI: 3

Zombie

The zombie is a character that is undead and can only be permanently killed by exorcism. They are terrible units that are only seen as enemies.

BEASTS

Octopus

The octopus does well in water and does an 8-arm whirlpool in water. You may not want to use water-based characters due to the lack of water in stages. I give them 1 star.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 1
STR: 6
INT: 3
AGI: 3

Griffin

The griffin has the abilities to fly and to use a ranged attack called wind storm. They are decent beasts, but their fighting ability is weak. I would just stick with recruiting a hawkman. I give them 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 3
STR: 4
INT: 5
AGI: 4

Cockatrice

The cockatrice has the abilities to petrify and to fly. They are the same power level as the griffin, decent but not spectacular. I give them 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 3
STR: 4
INT: 4
AGI: 5

Cerberus

The cerberus has the ability to use a fire breath attack causing sleep. Cerberus are decent, but also not superb. I give them 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 7
MP: 3
STR: 6
INT: 5
AGI: 5

DRAGON

Fire Dragon

The fire dragon uses a confusion breath attack which also burns grass. Confusion is a decent effect and dragons are also good fighters. I give them 2 stars because they are not really needed.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 4
STR: 7
INT: 4
AGI: 3

Earth Dragon

The earth dragon uses a poison breath attack. Poison is worthless so do not use this dragon. I give it 1 star.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 4
STR: 7
INT: 4
AGI: 3

Thunder Dragon

The thunder dragon uses a stun breath attack. Stun is the best dragon effect. I give it 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 4
STR: 7
INT: 4
AGI: 3

Ice Dragon

The ice dragon uses a sleep breath attack. The sleep ability is decent, but not as good as the effects for the thunder or fire dragon. This dragon deserves 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 4
STR: 7
INT: 4
AGI: 3

Mushus

Mushus  requires a dragon to have HP 259, STR 130, AGI 69, and L. Its special ability gives a power up to all allies within 3 spaces. Better than the Naga, Mushus' ability is not the best dragon ability. I give it 2 stars. Remember that even though it is an evolved form, dragons are not very good.

Stat Growth:
HP: 9
MP: 4
STR: 8
INT: 5
AGI: 4

Naga

Naga requires a dragon to have HP 259, STR 130, AGI 69, and N. Its special abilities are that it moves better than normal dragons and it becomes stronger in water. The abilities are pretty worthless giving this dragon 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 9
MP: 4
STR: 8
INT: 5
AGI: 4

Vrtra

Vrtra requires a dragon to have HP 259, STR 130, AGI 69, and C.  Its special ability makes all enemies within 3 spaces have fear. It can also fly. The best dragon to get because it can fly. Make all of your evolved dragons this one if possible. I give it 3 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 9
MP: 4
STR: 8
INT: 5
AGI: 4

Dragon Zombie

(technically not a dragon but listed here for reference)

The dragon zombie is an evil undead dragon with the ability to regenerate. Have a dragon die and then use necromancy on it to make it a zombie dragon. Even thought it regenerates, why would you let a unit die on purpose? It is about as strong as the lower level dragons so I give it 2 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 8
MP: 4
STR: 7
INT: 4
AGI: 3

DENIZENS OF THE
       NETHERWORLD

Gremlin

The gremlin has the abilities to use two kiss attacks. One attack confuses/damages the enemy and the other can petrify. They can also fly and float. Cool abilities, terrible fighters. I give them 1 star.

Stat Growth:
HP: 4
MP: 6
STR: 4
INT: 4
AGI: 7

Gorgon

The gorgon is a denizen of the Netherworld capable of causing some problems. It can cause petrification with a powerful gaze attack. These are powerful units and are better than most of the other non-human classes. Quite usable and deserving of 3 stars.

Stat Growth:
HP: 6
MP: 4
STR: 5
INT: 6
AGI: 4

Daemon

Daemons have wings but cannot fly. They appear late in the game. Not exactly all that powerful, but they are pretty decent. They use bane spells. Daemons can also summon ghosts.

Stat Growth:
HP: 7
MP: 4
STR: 5

AGI: 5

Dark Stalker

Dark Stalkers are evil ninjas that are more powerful and even more deadly than their counterpart.

Stat Growth

Stat Growth
HP: 8

Extremely powerful giants, these guys are not something to mess with. They are stronger than any basic unit, but their magic defense is the worst in the game.
